Baltimore Newborn Photographer | Sugarloaf Photography
When you search for a Baltimore newborn photographer, you’re not just looking for someone with a nice camera. You’re looking for someone you can trust to handle your baby, someone who knows what they’re doing, who will make you feel calm when you’re still running on two hours of sleep, and who will give you photographs you’ll actually want to hang on your wall.
I get it. I’m Jussara, and I’ve been photographing newborns for 14 years. In that time, I’ve welcomed hundreds of families into my studio – many of them from Baltimore and Baltimore County – and I’ve learned that the session itself matters just as much as the images you take home.
This post is my honest answer to every question I hear from Baltimore-area families before they book. My hope is that by the end, you’ll know whether Sugarloaf Photography is the right fit for your family – and if it is, you’ll feel completely confident reaching out.

Why Families from Baltimore Choose a Studio in Bel Air
My studio, Sugarloaf Photography, is located at 1 Heighe Street in Bel Air, Maryland, about 30 minutes north of Baltimore. I know what you’re thinking: why would I drive to Harford County when there are photographers closer to home?
Here’s what I hear from Baltimore families after their session, almost every single time: “I’m so glad I made the drive.”
A dedicated newborn studio is a different experience than a photographer who shoots in your home or rents a generic space. My studio stays warm – newborns need a room temperature closer to 80°F to stay sleepy and comfortable. The props, wraps, and wardrobe are all here and ready before you arrive. There’s no setup scramble, no worrying about whether your living room has the right light. You walk in, sit down on the couch with a coffee, and let me handle everything.
For families who just brought a baby home, that kind of effortless experience is worth a 30-minute drive.

What 14 Years of Newborn Photography Actually Means
There are a lot of photographers who offer newborn sessions. Fewer specialize in them – and fewer still have been doing it exclusively for over a decade.
After 14 years photographing newborns, I’ve seen just about everything. Babies who won’t stop wiggling. Babies who need to feed four times during a session. Siblings who are thrilled about the baby and siblings who are decidedly less thrilled. First-time parents who are nervous, and experienced parents who are just exhausted. I know how to read a baby, how to adapt when a planned pose isn’t working, and how to keep a session calm when things don’t go exactly to plan – because in 14 years, they often don’t, and that’s completely fine.
I’ve also invested heavily in continued training in advanced newborn posing and safety with respected industry educators. This isn’t something I did once and moved on from. Newborn photography best practices evolve, and staying current is something I take seriously.
What that means for your family: you’re not handing your 10-day-old to someone who is still figuring it out.

Safety Is the Foundation of Every Session
I want to talk about this plainly, because I think it matters more than any aesthetic choice.
Newborn posing looks simple in photographs. It isn’t. The poses that look most natural, a baby curled softly, hands tucked under their chin, require careful positioning, support, and an understanding of how newborn bodies move. Poses are never forced. If a baby resists, we try something else. If they need to eat, we stop and feed them. If they need to be held by mom for twenty minutes before they’ll settle, that’s exactly what we do.
Sessions at Sugarloaf Photography move slowly on purpose. I’d rather take three hours and get it right than rush through in ninety minutes and compromise your baby’s comfort. Every parent who has sat in my studio has watched me work, and I think that transparency, being able to see exactly how your baby is handled, is one of the most important things I offer.

What a Sugarloaf Photography Newborn Session Looks Like
Here’s what the process actually looks like from start to finish, so there are no surprises.
During pregnancy: The best time to reach out is during your second trimester. I photograph a limited number of newborns each month, and spots fill up based on due dates. You don’t need to have everything figured out – we’ll talk through your vision, preferences, and any questions you have, and I’ll send a questionnaire to help us plan.
Before your session: You’ll receive prep guidance so you know exactly how to get your baby ready – things like feeding timing, keeping them awake just before you arrive, and what to wear. Most families say they felt more prepared walking into their session than they expected.
Session day: Plan for two to four hours. Newborn sessions aren’t rushed. We’ll work through a mix of posed setups and natural family moments. You’ll have access to my full studio wardrobe – wraps, outfits, and textures selected to photograph beautifully – as well as a client closet with dresses for moms and neutral options for dads and siblings. You don’t need to bring much. Just yourselves and your baby.
After your session: You’ll receive a private gallery of proofs to choose from. From there, we’ll finalize your digitals, prints, and keepsake products. My goal is for you to end up with images you’re proud to display – not just a folder of JPEGs you’ll never get around to printing.

The Style: Timeless, Not Trendy
Photography styles come and go. What I’ve aimed for over 14 years is images that feel just as beautiful a decade from now as they do today.
That means soft, neutral tones. Clean, uncluttered compositions. A balance of gently posed portraits and natural moments – your baby’s tiny fingers, the way they smell your shoulder, the look on your partner’s face when they don’t know you’re watching.
These are the images that end up framed above mantles and passed down in albums. Not the ones with excessive props and backdrops that feel very 2015.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I book my newborn session? During your second trimester, ideally. Sessions are scheduled around your due date and photographed within the first 5–14 days after birth, when babies are sleepiest and most comfortable with posed work. Booking early ensures I can hold a spot for you.
How long does a newborn session take? Plan for two to four hours. Sessions aren’t rushed, and we build in time for feeding, soothing, and wardrobe changes.
What should I bring? Very little. The studio is fully stocked with wraps, outfits, and props. I’ll send a prep guide before your session with everything you need to know.
Do you photograph siblings and parents too? Absolutely – family and sibling portraits are a natural part of every session.
How much does a newborn session cost? Investment details are shared during your consultation so we can talk through what makes sense for your family. You can start that conversation by filling out the contact form below.
What if my baby is fussy or won’t sleep? This is completely normal, and it’s something I’ve navigated hundreds of times. We work with your baby’s pace, not against it. A fussy baby doesn’t mean a bad session.
