What to Pack in Your Baby’s Hospital Go-Home Bag | A Guide from a Bel Air Newborn Photographer

Nobody tells you that packing the go-home bag feels like a test you did not study for.

You find a list online. Then another one. Then a third that contradicts the second. By the time you are done reading, you have a pile of things you may or may not need and no idea what actually matters.

I’m Jussara, and I’ve been photographing newborns in Bel Air, Maryland for 15 years. Over that time, I’ve welcomed hundreds of families into my studio during those tender first days at home with their new baby. I’ve listened to all the stories, the drive home from the hospital, the nerves of that first night, the blur of the first week. I’ve heard what parents were so glad they packed, and what stayed untouched in the hospital bag.

Here is the honest version of the list.

For Your Baby

The going home outfit Pick something with snaps at the bottom, not buttons. You will be doing this half asleep and buttons will make you unreasonably angry. Size newborn is fine for most babies, but pack a 0-3 month backup. Babies do not read size charts.

A swaddle blanket The hospital will send you home with one of theirs, but bring your own too. The muslin ones are soft and big enough to actually wrap a baby properly. You will use this constantly.

A hat Babies lose heat fast. Pack one that fits snugly, not the kind that slides down over their eyes every time you move them.

Socks Pack three pairs. You will lose one before you leave the parking garage.

Diapers and wipes The hospital will provide these, but pack a small stash of your own. Newborn size for most babies, though if you are expecting a larger baby, have size one ready too.

A car seat, installed before you go into labor This is not optional and it is not something to figure out in the hospital parking lot. The American Academy of Pediatrics has clear guidelines on newborn car seat safety worth reading before your due date. Have it checked at a certified inspection station if you are not sure you did it right. Most fire stations will do this for free.

For You

A loose, comfortable outfit to wear home You will still look pregnant when you leave the hospital. This is normal and nobody warns you about it. Pack something forgiving. Your regular clothes can wait.

Flip flops or slip-on shoes Bending over to tie anything is not something you want to do on day two postpartum. Pack shoes you can get on without hands.

Your phone charger You will think you packed it. You did not. Pack it now.

Snacks Hospital food stops when you are discharged. The drive home takes longer than you think. Pack something real to eat.

Insurance card and ID Keep these in the bag now. Do not leave them out to grab later.

A small pillow for the car Hold it against your abdomen for the drive home. Postpartum bodies do not love bumps in the road. This small thing makes a real difference.

What Most Lists Forget

Your pediatrician’s contact information written down You will need this in the first 48 hours home and you will not remember the number. Write it down and put it in the bag now.

A second outfit for the baby Babies have blowouts. Pack a backup. Pack a second outfit for yourself too while you are at it.

Hospital paperwork you want copies of Ask the nursing staff before you leave. You will want these later.

Something warm for the car Hospital rooms are heated. Parking garages are not. Pack a light blanket to lay over your baby for the walk to the car.

What You Can Skip

Six outfits You are going home, not moving in. Keep the bag lean.

Newborn shoes They fall off immediately and serve no purpose on a baby who cannot walk. Save the space.

A full makeup bag You will not use it. Pack lip balm and move on.

One More Thing

Those first days home are a lot. Everything is new, nothing works the way you expected, and the love is bigger than you were prepared for.

If you booked your newborn session during your pregnancy, you already have one less thing to figure out. Your date is on the calendar, your prep guide is in your inbox, and all you have to do is show up.

If you have not booked yet, do it before you pack that bag. The newborn window is 5 to 14 days. It moves fast.

I photograph newborn sessions at my studio on Heighe Street in Bel Air, MD and serve families across Harford County, Baltimore, and the surrounding area. Reach out with your due date and I will check availability.
