4 Looks for Your Maternity Session (And Why Each One Works)
A Maryland Maternity Photographer’s Guide to Styling Your Session
Most moms spend weeks stressing about what to wear for their maternity session. And most of the time, it’s the wrong thing to stress about.
As a maternity photographer in Maryland, I’ve photographed hundreds of sessions. What I’ve learned is this: the right look isn’t about being the most glamorous version of yourself or the most casual. It’s about choosing a look that matches who you are and what you want to remember about this season of your life.
That’s why at Sugarloaf Photography, you’re never left guessing. You come in with a stylist, a full wardrobe, and accessories already waiting for you. Hair and makeup is available right here at the studio. Every detail is taken care of so you can focus on the only thing that matters, feeling like yourself, just elevated.
Here are 4 looks we love for Maryland maternity photography, and how each one tells a different kind of story.
Look 1: Glam with Couture Tulle Gowns

Nothing photographs quite like a voluminous tulle gown. The movement, the texture, the drama. It creates images that feel more editorial than documentary, more heirloom than snapshot.
This is the look for the mom who wants something timeless and artistic. Something she could frame above her bed and still love in twenty years. Our studio carries a curated collection of couture maternity gowns specifically selected for how they photograph, not just how they look on a hanger.
Poses for this look tend to be intentional and powerful. We direct every movement, so nothing ever looks stiff or staged. You’re not told to “just stand there with your hand over your belly.” Each frame is built deliberately around you, your shape, your light.
Glam works beautifully as your main look, but it also pairs well with one of the softer looks below if you want variety in your gallery.
Look 2: Modern Casual

Not every mom wants a gown. Modern casual done right is clean, intentional, and still gorgeous. This is not the photo your husband snapped of you in the kitchen. This is a styled session with professional lighting, professional direction, and a photographer who knows exactly which angles celebrate your body at this stage.
This look also works well for partner poses and family shots if you want to include your partner or older children. The more relaxed feel tends to bring out real emotional connection.
We can pull pieces from our wardrobe collection and layer in the right accessories so the look stays polished without feeling overdressed. You bring yourself. We handle the rest.
Look 3: Flowing Fabrics

Flowing fabrics are some of the most versatile in Maryland maternity photography because they do something that nothing else can. They move. There are numerous ways we can use fabric in maternity portraits.
A draped fabric, caught mid-flow, creates an image that feels alive. It’s soft and feminine without being overly formal. It photographs beautifully against both bright, airy backgrounds and deeper, moodier tones, which means it works in any lighting setup we create in the studio. We’ll guide you through it naturally. Real moments, directed well.
If you’re not sure what to pick, this look is almost always a yes.
Look 4: Semi-Nude, Tasteful and Empowering

This one surprises people. A tasteful semi-nude look isn’t about exposure. It’s about celebrating your body in a way that nothing else quite captures. Your bump is beautiful. Your skin, your shape, this whole season of your life, it deserves to be documented.
Everything is done with intention. Poses are chosen specifically to flatter your shape, show off the bump, and create images that feel powerful rather than vulnerable. We work with the light, the angles, and the composition to make sure every frame celebrates you.
This look works especially well paired with a wrap, a sheer fabric drape, or simple jewelry from our accessory collection. Moms who try this look rarely regret it. Most wish they’d done more of it.
What Makes a Sugarloaf Maternity Session Different
A lot of photographers in Maryland offer maternity photography. Not all of them are offering the same experience.
At Sugarloaf Photography, your session takes place in a private, intimate boutique studio in Bel Air, Maryland. No outdoor parks with strangers walking by. No stressful location logistics. Just you, in a beautiful, controlled space, with a photographer who knows how to make you feel at ease from the minute you walk in. Don’t get me wrong, I love a beautiful sunset session on a field of flowers, but that is not a year-round thing we can find. If you want to do your session outdoors, we can do it. I did for years!
Here’s what’s already included or available for your studio session:
- Full wardrobe of maternity gowns, wraps, and casual looks available in studio
- Accessories and style tips to complete your look
- Hair and makeup available as an add-on, done right here before your session
- Directed posing that never feels stiff, every movement is intentional
- Organic, emotional posing options for partner and family connection shots
- Angles and lighting chosen specifically to make you look and feel your best
This is not a session you’ll forget. And it’s not something you’ll wish you’d done differently.
FAQ: Maternity Sessions at Sugarloaf Photography
When should I book my maternity session in Maryland?
The best time is between 28 and 34 weeks. Your belly is full and beautiful, you still feel comfortable moving, and you have plenty of time before delivery. That said, every pregnancy is different. Reach out early so we can hold your ideal date.
Do I need to bring my own outfits?
No. Our studio has a full wardrobe available for you to use. Gowns, wraps, casual looks, accessories. You can absolutely bring something personal if you want, but nothing is required. I can help you pull together the looks that work best for your body and your vision.
Can my partner or other children be included?
Yes. Partner poses are some of the most emotional and meaningful images from a maternity session. We do real connection poses, not awkward smiling shots. Kids can also be included for part of the session. We’ll plan the timing so everyone gets their best moments.
Is hair and makeup included?
Hair and makeup is available as an add-on and can be done right at the studio before your session begins. Many clients find that starting with hair and makeup sets the tone for the whole experience. It’s worth it!
What if I’m nervous about how I’ll look?
That’s the most common thing I hear before a session. And it’s almost never the thing people say after. Every pose is directed for your body. Every angle is chosen to celebrate your shape, not expose it. You’ll leave feeling like you had no idea you could look like that. That’s kind of the whole point.
Where is Sugarloaf Photography located?
Sugarloaf Photography is a private boutique studio located in Bel Air, Maryland, serving Harford County and the greater Maryland area including Baltimore County and Cecil County. Sessions are studio-based year-round, with select outdoor mini sessions offered seasonally.
