What to Wear for Your Christmas Mini Session in Bel Air, Maryland

Choosing outfits for your family Christmas photos doesn’t have to be complicated. With a little planning and a few coordinating colors, you can create a look that feels polished, classic, and completely your own.

This year, our Christmas minis and Santa Experience feature a Ralph Lauren inspired holiday look, with rich colors, traditional details, and a warm, festive atmosphere. If you’re wondering what to wear for your Christmas mini session, here’s where I’d start.

The Christmas Color Palette

For this year’s holiday portraits, we’re using a rich palette of deep red, forest green, navy blue, and brown, with a touch of plaid to bring in that traditional Christmas feel.

These colors work beautifully together and give you plenty of options when choosing outfits for the whole family.

You don’t need everyone wearing the same color. In fact, mixing the shades creates a more natural, coordinated look.

Three Family Outfit Ideas

1. Classic and Cozy

For a traditional Christmas look, start with a deep red sweater for Mom paired with a navy skirt or dress. Dad can wear a navy sweater or blazer with a button-down shirt and brown trousers.

For the children, consider a forest green dress for your daughter, a navy sweater with tan pants for your school-aged son, and a cream knit sweater with brown or green trousers for your toddler.

Brown leather shoes and simple accessories bring everything together.

2. Forest Green and Navy

If you love a slightly dressier look, make forest green the main color for Mom with a velvet or knit dress. Dad can wear a navy blazer with a light blue shirt and brown trousers.

For the children, try a navy dress for your daughter, a cream sweater with navy pants for your older son, and a forest green sweater with tan trousers for your youngest.

This combination feels festive without relying too heavily on red.

3. Warm Neutrals and Rich Colors

For a softer, more relaxed look, combine cream, brown, navy, and forest green. Mom could wear a cream sweater with a brown skirt, while Dad wears a brown blazer, green sweater, and navy or tan trousers.

For the children, mix navy dresses, cream cardigans, green sweaters, and classic brown trousers.

The result is a coordinated family look with plenty of variety in color and texture.

What to Wear for the Santa Experience

The same color palette works beautifully for our Santa Experience. Think classic holiday outfits that feel special but still allow children to move comfortably, sit with Santa, and enjoy their visit.

Velvet dresses, cable-knit sweaters, collared shirts, corduroy trousers, and classic cardigans are all great choices. A small plaid detail can add a festive touch without making the entire outfit feel too busy.

If you’re dressing several children, choose one or two main colors and repeat them throughout the outfits. For example, a green dress, a navy sweater, and a cream cardigan can look beautiful together with brown shoes and subtle red accents.

Most importantly, choose clothing your children can comfortably wear throughout their session and Santa visit.

A Few Tips Before You Choose Your Outfits

Coordinate instead of matching. Everyone wearing the exact same color can feel a little too uniform. Mix complementary shades instead.

Pay attention to texture. Velvet, wool, corduroy, cable knits, and soft cotton add visual interest and suit the classic holiday setting.

Keep patterns simple. If you’d like to include plaid, let it be one of the smaller details in your family’s outfits. Solid colors will help balance it.

Choose comfortable shoes. Classic brown boots, loafers, Mary Janes, and simple dress shoes complement this palette beautifully.

Avoid large logos and neon colors. These can draw attention away from your family’s faces and compete with the rich holiday colors.

Plan everyone’s outfits together. Lay everything out before your session to see how the colors work as a group. You can make small adjustments without buying an entirely new wardrobe.
